K-12 Teaching
Elementary School
In 2017, Mr. Katzen worked as the Elementary Music and Band teacher at Rosenwald Elementary School in South Bay, FL. He taught just under 300 students in K-5, including a 4th/5th grade woodwind class, 4th/5th grade brass class, and 4th/5th grade piano class.
His 4th/5th grade woodwind and brass classes was for first-year band students. Based on trying out all of the instruments, he placed on instruments, such as flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, trombone, or euphonium.
Mr. Katzen's curriculum used was primarily drawn from Spotlight on Music by MacMillan/McGraw-Hill, Standard of Excellence by Bruce Pearson, and Accelerated Piano Adventures for the Older Beginner: Book 1 by Nancy and Randall Faber. He also set up a music assembly for the Kindergarten, 1st grade, and 2nd grade students so that they could see and hear a trio from the Palm Beach Opera.
Below are two different lesson plans used and one of the posters he created for his students.
