Conducting
Throughout Mr. Katzen's collegiate career, he had several opportunities to practice and perform as a conductor. He enrolled in three conducting classes at Penn State: Basic Conducting (taught by Dr. S. Carter Biggers), Intermediate Conducting (taught by Dr. O. Richard Bundy), and Advanced Conducting (taught by Professor Dennis Glocke) and Advanced Graduate Conducting (taught by Dr. Bruce Moss) at Bowling Green State University. His experiences outside of these four classes include conducting the Penn State University Clarinet Choir (directed by Dr. Anthony Costa), serving as the music director and conductor for three musicals at Penn State, and serving as music section leader for the Penn State University Marching Blue Band Baritone section.
In the fall of 2014, he served as one of the conductors for the "Partners in Music" South Band. "Partners in Music" is an event in the State College Area School District designed to give fifth grade band and orchestra students an opportunity to rehearse and perform with the peers across the school district. Mr. Katzen taught Code of Hammurabi: King of Babylon by Victor López. While enrolled at Bowling Green State University, he had the opportunity to conduct and teach the University Band on Ye Banks and Braes O' Bonnie Doon by Percy Grainger and the Tuba/Euphonium Ensemble on an original composition, Fanfare on Six Pitches. After college, Mr. Katzen had the opportunity to work with students in several other settings including the Maitland Middle School Summer Band Camp in 2015 and 2017, the Mainland High School Concert Band and String Orchestra from 2016-2017, and the Glades Central Community High School "Maroon Machine" Marching Band in 2017. |
